What Is the Cost of Shredding Services?

Honest pricing breakdown for paper shredding in metro Boston. What you really pay per pound, per box and per pickup, with eight real-world example totals so you can plan your budget.

Most metro Boston residents and small businesses contacting us for the first time want one answer above all others: what does this cost? The honest answer depends on three variables: how much paper you have, whether you bring it to us or we come to you and which service plan fits your situation. This guide breaks down every component of shredding cost in 2026 so you can budget accurately before you book.

The Three Cost Components

Every shredding job has three cost components.

Destruction cost. This is the per-pound or per-box charge that covers the actual shredding. For metro Boston shredding services, this typically ranges from 89 cents per pound at the cheap end to $2 per pound at the premium end. Our rate is 99 cents per pound across all service plans.

Transportation cost. If we come to your location, you pay a transportation fee that covers truck, fuel, two-person crew and the documented chain of custody. Our base transportation fee starts at $129 (zone-based on travel distance), mileage-adjusted beyond our standard 30-mile radius from Tewksbury. Drop-off has no transportation fee since you bring the paper to us.

Compliance fees. Two flat per-job fees apply to every job regardless of volume. The HIPAA Filing Fee is $14.95 and covers issuance and filing of your Certificate of Destruction. The Environmental Compliance Fee is $19.95 and covers certified recycling and chain-of-custody documentation between our facility and the recycler. Combined, that is $34.90 in compliance fees on every job.

Per-Pound vs Per-Box Pricing

Two pricing options apply to most jobs.

Per-pound: 99 cents per pound. No minimum. Default for any volume under 10 boxes. Most accurate for mixed-content destruction.

Per-box: $15 per small box (10 by 12 by 15 inches) or $20 per banker’s box (10 by 15 by 24 inches). 10-box minimum to qualify. We always quote both and bill at whichever lands lower for your volume.

The math: a typical banker’s box weighs 25 to 30 pounds when full. At 99 cents per pound, that is $24.75 to $29.70 per box. The $20 box rate kicks in at 10+ boxes and saves a small amount per box on full loads. For mixed loads with lighter boxes (5 to 15 pounds), per-pound is usually cheaper.

Eight Real Cost Examples

Here are eight common metro Boston job sizes with the actual total cost. All include the $34.90 compliance fees.

1. Personal tax cleanout, 15 lbs, drop-off: $14.85 destruction + $34.90 fees = $47.75 total.

2. Estate executor, 5 banker’s boxes (~125 lbs), drop-off: $123.75 + $34.90 = $156.65 total. Per-pound is cheaper than the box rate at this volume.

3. Solo practitioner annual cleanout, 15 banker’s boxes, drop-off: 15 x $20 = $300 + $34.90 = $332.90 total. Box rate beats per-pound on full boxes.

4. Small office cleanout, 8 boxes (~200 lbs), Boston pickup: $198 + $129+ transport + $34.90 = $360.85 total.

5. Estate liquidation, 25 banker’s boxes, Andover pickup: 25 x $20 = $500 + $129+ + $34.90 = $662.85 total.

6. Practice closure, 60 boxes, Lowell pickup: 60 x $20 = $1,200 + $129+ + $34.90 = $1,362.85 total.

7. Witnessed pickup, 12 boxes, Burlington: 12 x $20 = $240 + $129+ transport + $49.95 witnessed + $34.90 fees = $452.80 total.

8. Office year-end purge, 30 banker’s boxes, Lexington pickup: 30 x $20 = $600 + $129+ + $34.90 = $762.85 total.

Hidden Costs to Watch in Other Quotes

National shredding chains often advertise headline rates 20 to 30 percent below ours. The headline is rarely the real cost. Watch for these line items in competitor quotes that show up on the actual invoice.

Fuel surcharge. A separate percentage of the destruction subtotal added monthly or quarterly. Often 15 to 25 percent. Not in the headline rate.

Environmental or recycling fee. Often $20 to $50 per pickup, more than what we charge. Sometimes rebranded as “sustainability fee.”

Administrative fee. Vague flat charge $5 to $15 per invoice.

Long-term contract penalties. Cancellation fees for ending contracts before the term ends, often 6 to 12 months of service value.

Annual rate increases. Built into the contract, typically 3 to 7 percent every year.

Per-pound surcharges above included weight. When console weights exceed an unspecified threshold, additional per-pound charges kick in.

When comparing rates, always ask each vendor for the all-in total cost of one specific job at your typical volume. Get it in writing. Do not trust headline per-pound rates without the full fee breakdown.

Scheduled Service Plans for Recurring Volume

If your office or practice produces ongoing volume, scheduled service contracts replace per-event pricing with flat monthly rates that bundle transportation and compliance fees.

  • Single bin monthly: $195/month flat. Includes one 64-gallon locked office console, monthly pickup, transportation, destruction up to 100 lbs, Certificate every visit.
  • Double bin monthly: $379.95/month. Two consoles, up to 200 lbs included.
  • Triple bin monthly: $549.95/month. Three consoles, up to 300 lbs included.
  • Bi-weekly or weekly: Add 50 to 75 percent for bi-weekly, double for weekly.

Most contract clients see 25 to 40 percent savings versus per-event pricing once volume scales. See scheduled plan pillar for service detail.

Cost Comparison: Office Shredder vs Professional Service

Most metro Boston offices think the office shredder is cheaper than professional service. The math rarely works out that way once staff time and missing documentation enter the picture.

Office shredder annual cost for a 10-person office producing one banker’s box per week: hardware amortized $135 to $400/year, replacement bags $80, maintenance $40, staff time at 1 hour per box = $1,820/year, compliance documentation $0 (none produced). Total: roughly $2,075 to $2,340/year.

Professional drop-off annual cost for the same volume: 4 quarterly drop-offs at 13 boxes each = $1,171.60/year, staff time at 30 minutes per visit = $70/year. Total: roughly $1,242/year with full Certificate documentation.

Professional drop-off costs less than the office shredder while delivering full compliance documentation. The math gets more dramatic at higher volumes.

What Drives Cost Up or Down in Your Quote

Several factors shift your final cost beyond the standard rate card.

Volume matters. Higher volume means box rate kicks in (10+ boxes), saving on a per-unit basis. The transportation fee is fixed regardless of volume, so it dilutes per pickup as volume rises.

Distance matters. The base transportation starting at $129 (zone-based) covers any pickup within 30 miles of Tewksbury. Beyond that, mileage adjustment kicks in. For our 14-city service area, the base fee almost always applies. Cities outside our footprint see additional charges.

Frequency matters. One-time pickups carry the full transportation fee each time. Recurring scheduled service amortizes that cost across the contract, which is why scheduled service often saves 25 to 40 percent for ongoing volume.

Witnessed adds $49.95. If you want to watch destruction at our facility, the witnessed scheduling fee covers the reserved appointment slot and Certificate annotations.

Hard drives add $15 each. Bundled with paper destruction or standalone media destruction events. Volume discounts at 25+ drives.

The most cost-effective combination for most metro Boston clients: drop-off if you have 1 to 5 boxes nearby, off-site pickup if you have 6+ boxes or a tight calendar, scheduled service if you have weekly or monthly recurring volume.

Cost FAQ

Why is there a 10-box minimum on box rates?
Box rates assume a transaction at scale. Below 10 boxes, the per-pound rate almost always lands cheaper. We always quote both options and charge whichever is lower for your specific volume.
What payment methods are accepted?
Cash, all major credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, AmEx, Discover), business checks, ACH for repeat business clients. Personal checks accepted with valid Massachusetts ID. Payment due at time of service unless you have an established account.
Are there hidden fees?
No. The rate card lists every line item we bill. Transportation may adjust for mileage beyond our standard radius, but we quote the adjusted total before pickup.
How does mileage adjust the transportation fee?
Base $129+ covers any pickup within 30 miles of Tewksbury. Beyond 30 miles, approximately $1.50 per additional round-trip mile. A pickup in Worcester (45 miles each way) would run approximately $175 transportation. Always quoted before pickup.
What about hard drive destruction pricing?
Hard drive destruction runs $15 per drive with volume discounts at 25+ drives. Can be handled during the same pickup as paper destruction or as a standalone media destruction event. See hard drive page.
