The word “secure” gets thrown around in shredding marketing without much definition. Real security is six specific things that work together. Skipping any one layer creates a gap. This guide walks through each of the six layers with how to verify them and what to ask any shredding service you evaluate.
Layer 1: Locked containers at the source
Security starts the moment a document enters the destruction stream. Sensitive documents go into locked consoles or secure containers, not regular bins or open boxes. Once locked, only authorized service personnel with proper keys or pickup credentials can open them. Staff at your office cannot retrieve documents after they drop in, intentionally or otherwise.
Our consoles use commercial-grade locks rated for high-volume shredding service environments. The slot allows insertion but prevents extraction without unlocking. The console itself is heavy enough that removal without proper handling equipment is impractical.
Layer 2: Vetted, bonded service personnel
The people who pick up your consoles are the next layer. Real security services background-check every employee, bond them through commercial insurance, and provide identification badges that match the truck. Drivers are trained on chain-of-custody protocols specific to medical, legal and financial document handling.
Verify by asking specifically: “Are your service personnel background-checked and bonded?” Quality services say yes, provide the documentation, and explain their hiring process. Services that gloss over this question typically have weaker controls.
Layer 3: Locked, GPS-tracked transport
From your console to our facility, documents travel under physical lock. Trucks are equipped with locked compartments, GPS tracking and route monitoring. The driver does not have unsupervised access to the cargo. Stops are documented and unscheduled stops trigger alerts.
The transport leg is where many security failures happen at competitors. A truck that stops at the driver’s house, an unlocked rear door, or a vehicle without GPS turns chain of custody into a verbal claim. Our transport addresses each of these failure modes directly.
Layer 4: AAA+ Rated destruction standards
AAA+ Rated certification covers the destruction event itself. Particle size meets industry standard for unrecoverable destruction (typically smaller than 5/8 by 1/4 inch for paper). The shredding equipment is industrial-grade with capacity to handle full-volume runs without overheating. Cross-cut destruction prevents reconstruction even with sophisticated technique.
Our Tewksbury facility runs BBB A+ Rated Business equipment under monthly internal audit and annual external audit. Certificates available on request. The shredded material drops directly into baling equipment and onto recycling trucks with no intermediate handling.
Layer 5: Video-monitored destruction floor
The destruction floor itself is monitored 24/7 with video surveillance. Footage is retained for 90 days minimum. Camera coverage spans the truck unloading area, the shredding equipment intake, the baling area, and the recycling truck loading. Any handling step has a video record.
For witnessed shredding clients, the camera record supplements the in-person observation. For scheduled clients, the camera record provides evidence of proper handling that would be available if any chain-of-custody question ever arose during an audit or investigation.
Layer 6: Certificate of Destruction with audit details
The final security layer is documentation. Every destruction event ends with a Certificate of Destruction emailed within 24 hours. The certificate includes pickup date and location, weight or item count, destruction method (AAA+ Rated cross-cut shredding), facility location, witness signatures where applicable, and serial numbers for media destruction events.
Keep these certificates with your retention records. Auditors, regulators, insurance carriers and attorneys accept Certificates of Destruction as evidence of proper disposal. The certificate is what turns “we destroyed it” from a verbal claim into a defensible position.
Compliance value of layered security
Each of the six layers maps to a specific regulatory expectation. HIPAA Privacy Rule expects “policies and procedures to address final disposition of PHI.” 201 CMR 17.00 expects “secure destruction” as part of the WISP. FACTA Disposal Rule expects “reasonable measures” for proper disposal. GLBA Safeguards Rule expects “destruction of information that no longer has a business need.”
The layered approach satisfies all four. A service skipping any layer creates an audit finding waiting to happen. Boston-area healthcare practices, financial businesses and law firms cannot afford that exposure.

What does AAA+ Rated certification require?
Annual third-party audit covering particle size, employee screening (criminal background and drug testing), insurance coverage, facility security, transport security, and destruction protocols. The audit is rigorous and recertification annually.
Can I tour your facility before signing?
Yes. We host facility tours by appointment for prospective scheduled-service clients. You will see the destruction floor, the shredding equipment in operation and the security protocols in action.
Are office shredders considered secure?
For light personal use yes. For business documents covered by HIPAA, FACTA, GLBA or 201 CMR 17.00, office shredders typically lack the chain of custody and audit documentation regulators expect. Combine office and professional shredding for best results.
What happens if a security failure occurs?
Our insurance covers documented chain-of-custody failures. The Certificate of Destruction documents each successful event and creates an audit trail. We have not had a chain-of-custody breach in our 25-year operating history.
Can shredded paper be reconstructed?
Cross-cut destruction at AAA+ Rated particle size is effectively impossible to reconstruct, even with advanced forensic techniques. Strip-cut destruction (some lower-grade office shredders) can be reconstructed with effort. Always specify cross-cut.
Do I need a Business Associate Agreement?
For HIPAA-covered entities (healthcare practices, dental offices, behavioral health, etc.) yes. We provide a standard BAA aligned with HHS guidance. We sign before service starts.
