Frequently Asked Questions — Hard Drive Destruction

Deleting files and reformatting a drive removes the file directory — the index pointing to where files are stored — but does not overwrite the underlying data. Standard data recovery software can retrieve files from formatted drives in minutes. Physical destruction is the only method that guarantees data cannot be recovered, because it destroys the media itself, not just the file index.
Degaussing uses a powerful magnetic field to scramble data on magnetic media (traditional HDDs and backup tapes). However, it has no effect on solid state drives (SSDs), flash storage, USB drives, CDs, DVDs, or mobile devices — these media types are not affected by magnetic fields. Since most modern devices use SSD or flash storage, degaussing alone is no longer sufficient for most organizations. Physical destruction works for all media types.
The Certificate of Destruction documents the device make, model, and serial number for each destroyed device, along with the date of destruction, the destruction method, and our company information. For HIPAA compliance, it serves as documentation that electronic PHI was rendered permanently unreadable as required under 45 CFR 164.310(d)(2)(i).
